| I have a Ryobi with Variable speed and cast iron bed with legs and swivel head... Not any good for pens seeing that the tail stock and head dont line up properly - was the cause of a lot of frustration and the reason why I threw out mandrels. I just turn pens between centres now. I recently got a Trusty form Brigid and Bruce Evans at MrWoodturner. Much smaller and actually lines up accurately - ideal for pens and small things... Bargain for that price: Trusty 500One day when I'm all grown up I'll get a Jet 1642... | |

| each pulley gives you a different speed range that is then controlled by the variable speed knob.
Pulley 1 60-900 rpm Pulley 2 110-1800 rpm Pulley 3 220-3600 rpm
So if you need a speed of less than 220, the you would need to change the belt to the middle pulley.
For my turning I do not think that I would ever need to change, 220 is fine as a low speed.
Changing the belt is also very simple.
Hope this is clear

I love it.
Rob Rob do you have to change pulleys to change the speed or is electronically variable

Andy are these guys not the agents for the Jet lathes Yes as far as I know they are.
I want to get a Jet lathe as I lent my wood lathe to a friend and I turn on a metal lathe. I am not sure if there are any other good lathes to consider. I saw a Nova variable speed lathe at Cape Town Hardware centre that looked very solid and is a well known make(much cheaper than the Jet), but I had decided on the Jet variable speed and am very happy with my purchase. Variable speed rocks, I love telling other members of our club " Oh I normally finish off with a speed of 2114 rpm" Tend to get funny looks.
Rob Hi Rob which model do you have and what is the max speed of the lathe
